Job Description
This internship is an opportunity for an emerging director to learn the ins and outs of running a venue whilst developing their creative practice.
You will shadow the Rondo staff team and will experience what it’s like to run a small venue on a shoestring budget – from programming a season to cleaning the toilets!
The role offers several networking opportunities and the chance to see some of the most cutting-edge touring productions on the scene today, as well as mentorship and artistic support as you develop as a director and work towards producing your own show in the Rondo’s Summer 2025 season.
The successful candidate will be an essential and valuable member of the Rondo team, with the backing of a prestigious fringe venue.
Duties and responsibilities are flexible, but the following list will give you an idea of the sort of tasks you might undertake as Intern Director. No prior experience is needed, as full training will be provided.
Venue Duty Management:
• Managing the theatre during performances and overseeing events and visiting companies.
• Supervising volunteer staff, freelance technicians and work placement students.
• Preparing and running the theatre during events including setting up before shows and clearing up afterwards, venue cleaning, selling tickets through the box office and serving on the bar, end of day cashing up, and providing excellent customer service to audiences and visiting companies.
• Bar management including stock takes, restocking, and assisting with trips to the cash-and-carry.
• Maintaining the volunteer rota and helping to recruit and train new volunteers.
• End-of-day locking up.
Administration:
• Fielding enquiries from the public and visiting companies via phone, email and in person.
• Acting as a point of contact for visiting companies both during and prior to their visits.
• Assisting with the preparation of season brochures including proof reading, collating copy and images, and ensuring that all information is received by the deadline.
• Assisting with the programming of the theatre’s three seasons by distributing contracts to visiting companies and feeding back on show pitches to discuss suitability for programming at the Rondo.
• Uploading shows to the theatre’s website and box office system.
• Maintaining the theatre’s digital filing systems.
Marketing:
• Ensuring an appropriate rotation of posters/flyers in the public areas of the building and setting up displays in the theatre foyer.
• Overseeing the theatre’s social media presence and creating content for marketing shows via Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
• Writing and distributing press releases to local media outlets.
• Creating a weekly e-newsletter.
• Monitoring sales and identifying events that require extra marketing.
Artistic:
• Produce and direct a production of your choice, to be performed for a week in the Rondo’s Summer Season, with support and mentorship from Rondo staff.
• Watch shows at the Rondo during evening shifts, and maintain an awareness of other local performances, to feedback to Rondo staff.
• Take an active interest in local theatre, as well as on a wider scale, and scout future productions/companies for programming at the Rondo.
• Act as an ambassador for the theatre, promoting it as a venue for both artists and audiences.
• Represent the Rondo at local arts-related events on request.
All the above will be performed in conjunction with Rondo staff, and full training and support will be available.
