Walton's comic opera is set in 1880s Russia. A young widow is visited by her neighbour who demands repayment of a loan made to her late husband. Argument turns to insult and a dual is agreed as a solution. It's pistols at dawn, but will happiness prevail amongst these comic characters? |

The Bear by William Walton is set in a Russian drawing room in the 1880s.Madam Popova mourns the loss of her husband. Her neighbour Smirnov comes to demand repayment of a loan. There is fierce argument but, after an attempted dual, there is the inevitable happy ending to this witty comic opera.
Formed 1995 to perform one-act comic operas with piano played by musical director Edna Blackwell. Singers are well known for opera and concert work. The Rondo is their favourite venue.
