Walton's comic opera is set in 1880s Russia. A young widow is visited by her neighbour who demands repayment of a loan made to her late husband. Argument turns to insult and a dual is agreed as a solution. It's pistols at dawn, but will happiness prevail amongst these comic characters?

The Bear by William Walton is set in a Russian drawing room in the 1880s.Madam Popova mourns the loss of her husband. Her neighbour Smirnov comes to demand repayment of a loan. There is fierce argument but, after an attempted dual, there is the inevitable happy ending to this witty comic opera.

Formed 1995 to perform one-act comic operas with piano played by musical director Edna Blackwell. Singers are well known for opera and concert work. The Rondo is their favourite venue.

The Rondo Theatre is supported by Bath and North East Somerset Council.
